This week Amazon announced the launch of Amazon Simple Email Service.  Will this change the email marketing industry?  Do you think this will impact your business?  How will ESPs and their clients react?

  1. At first blush, it looks like a direct shot across the bow of companies that provide Mail Transfer Agents such as Message Systems. Of course, the assumption is that Amazon is using their own technology and not simply re-packaging an MTA vendor’s product (such as Message Systems).

    The service certainly opens the door for companies to re-visit their buy vs. built thinking when it comes to email delivery. Rather than outsource their email delivery to an Email Service Provider, they may choose to keep it in house and leverage Amazon’s Simple Email Service.

    It totally makes sense for Amazon to find out a way to utilize their computational capacity in new an innovative ways. My best guess is that if they were to expand their offering, email response analytics would be a good place to go – simply because analytics tend to be data and computational-extensive hence another good use for their cloud.

    That having been said, I don’t see them offering the other major component of email marketing: segmentation and message personalization, anytime soon.
